Houses dating from the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries are a feature of the picturesque town of Amboise on the river Loire. The chateau at Amboise stands high above the town on a hill on the left bank of the river and was the first Royal residence built in France and served as a Royal fortress during the hundred years war and until to the death of Charles VII in 1461. South of Amboise is the Pagode de Chanteloupe, the only remains of a chateau built by Duc de Choiseul as a copy of Versailles.
