Thann is built on the River Thur, not far from Mulhouse and close to the famous Rangen Mountain (large hill). The vineyards on its slopes were once the property of Strasbourg Cathedral.
Wellington and Lord Raglan stayed here at the Hotel at Two Keys which dates from about 1788. Behind this building is a Cour Franche, a yard where people could take refuge. In 1387, the town received permission to stamp silver currency. Most famous was the Pilgerthaler, Thaler being the former currency of Prussia. The Pilgerthaler or 'to the pilgrim' was issued from the workshops in 1511, a copy of which is displayed in the tourist office.
The town has many old houses from the 16th Century and is an architectural students dream. Not to be missed are the incredible carvings on the doorway of the Collégiale Saint-Thiébaut.
