The small town of Dôle, on the Doubs River and the Rhine-Rhone canal, dates from before Roman times. It became the medieval seat of the Dukes of Burgundy and from 1332 until 1674, was the capital of the Franche-Comté region. Louis Pasteur, (1822-1895) chemist and microbiologist, was born here.
Dôle is a quaint little town. In the centre of the old section of the town is the 16th Century church of Notre Dame and the many old houses dating from 15th and 18th Centuries.
